The concept of oneness

Over recent years we have come to learn that Reiki was a system that focused on the spiritual development of a student. The concept of ‘Oneness’ was a major part of Usui’s teachings, the key to personal or spiritual development.
Some of us may have experienced oneness, yet we cannot find the words to describe this experience. At other times we may read or hear words that seem to describe it perfectly, whether we have experienced oneness or not.
Oneness demonstrates the interconnected nature of all things. It eradicates all limitations, which the mind may perceive, limitations that get in the way of our personal development, our Reiki development and our belief in the power of intent.
The concept that we are all one, that we are all connected is at the core of Buddhist philosophy. It is also a concept recognised by science. I think this speech provides a beautiful, yet scientific acknowledgement of the concept of oneness.
The speech was part of an episode of ‘The Universe’ shown on the History channel.
“Recognise that the very molecules that make up your body, the atoms that construct the molecules are traceable to the crucibles that were once the centres of high mass stars that exploded their chemically rich guts into the galaxy, enriching pristine gas clouds, with the chemistry of life. So we’re all connected to each other biologically, to the earth chemically, and to the rest of the universe atomically, that’s kind a cool, that makes me smile and I actually feel quite large at the end of that, it’s not that we are better than the universe, we are part of the universe, we’re in the universes and the universe is in us.”
Neil DeGrasse Tyson, an Astrophysicist for the American Museum of Natural History
It seems that the day may come when science and spirituality will also be one. But why is the awareness of oneness (the interconnection of all things) so important? Not just for individuals but the whole of humankind. Oneness, the ability to see the ever constant chain reaction, the interconnection of all things, brings about profound and complete understanding of every aspect of life. Oneness allows us to see clearly the consequences of all thought, speech and action. In a sense it gives us a clear view of where we have evolved from and where we are heading. We can make choices with wisdom, clarity and compassion. In turn this creates unity and peace amongst all living beings and harmony with the Earth.
Generating an awareness of the interconnected nature of life and the universe was something that Usui’s students would have strived to achieve daily. Sometimes we get glimpses of it; sometimes a bit more. We can all experience this and Reiki provides some great tools to help us: Joshin Kokyo Ho, Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen and the ‘Connection’ Kotodama.
Even the elements of our spiritual practice are interconnected. If we focus on mindfulness but we ignore compassion, then we cannot be truly mindful. Our thoughts, words and actions affect those around us. Without compassion we cannot have the understanding that will prevent us from having a negative effect on others and therefore ourselves. Without compassion our minds cannot let go of hurtful and unpleasant events that occur when we interact with the world. This in turn plants negative seeds that fester in the mind. If we cannot let go of unpleasant experiences, we cannot live in the moment and we become stuck in the past. So oneness within Reiki is not just about merging with the energy, or doing distant healing, it is about our whole experience of life. It is fundamental to our personal or spiritual growth and the way we interact with our friends, family, clients, students and the rest of the world.
Experiencing oneness for the first time will change the way you perceive the world and you forever.
